Al Wakrah Stadium
Qatar’s bid for the 2022 world cup included the creation of 5 new stadiums to host the tournament. Al Wakrah was one of the stadiums chosen as a primary venue and as such needed the highest level of landscape design. Dealing with a complex build up, tournament and legacy phasing program meant that all aspects of visitor experience had to be carefully considered, especially given the punishing heat of the local climate.
A series of ‘scallops’ were carved into the podium upon which the Zaha Hadid designed stadium sits. The scallops form the basis for a series of parks and gardens which offer shaded walkways, playgrounds and food and shopping spaces for the wider masterplan.
